What is knowledge (ʿilm)? How do human beings know what they know? What is the role of reason (ʿaql), revelation (waḥy), sense perception, and testimony (khabar) in acquiring knowledge? Drawing from kalām, falsafa, and Sufi traditions, we will engage with competing theories of certainty (yaqīn), doubt (shakk), and illumination (kashf), considering the tensions and synergies between rationalism and spirituality.
